How to validate your idea without spending a fortune

MAY 2025

You don’t need millions to know if your idea makes sense

Hello Reader,

Happy New Month?

How was the month of April for you?

Over here for us at Mindcapital, it was full of deep conversations with founders, lots of learning, and a reminder that the simplest things are often the most powerful.

With that been said, I will like to ask you a question: What do you think is the most important when building a startup?

When most people think about building a startup, they imagine building an app, designing a logo, starting the business operations, setting up social media — and spending lots of money to “look” the part.

But before you spend anything, there’s one big question you need to answer:

Does anyone really need what you’re trying to build?

That’s where validation comes in.

Validation means finding out if your idea solves a real problem — and if people care enough to pay for it.

Did you notice the second part of what validation means?

We get it — the pressure to “build something” is strong.

But before you spend time and resources building anything, you need to validate your idea.

And here’s the good news: you can find answers to this questions without spending a dime.

Here are 3 simple (and free) ways to start validating your idea:

1. Talk to people.

Not your friends. Not your family.

Talk to real people who are facing the problem you want to solve. Ask what frustrates them. Ask what they’ve tried. Ask what worked and what didn’t.

The goal is to listen more than you speak.

2. Ask “why” — over and over.

When someone says something like, “I hate doing X,” don’t stop there.

Ask:

  • “Why is that a problem for you?”
  • “What happens if you don’t solve it?”
  • “Why haven’t you tried anything else?”

The real insights are usually under the surface. Dig deeper.

3. Test the demand with a simple offer.

You don’t need a product! You just need a clear way to show your idea and see if people are interested.

  • Sit down with someone who has the problem.
  • Show them what a better future would look like using your solution.
  • Ask them to make a tangible commitment to using it - ideally, pay for it.

Remember, you don’t need fancy tools. Just curiosity, courage, and a willingness to be wrong so you can get it right.

Your first goal isn’t to launch — it’s to learn.

In Case You Missed It

In March, our Founders Fellowship Spring Cohort kicked off with 15 fellows who will be working to validate their ideas over the course of 12 weeks.

Hsu Ken, a two-time startup founder (both startups got acquired) and currently Managing Partner at Iterative, a startup accelerator focused exclusively on Southeast Asia talks about his approach to validating ideas before he starts building in this video below.

The OST Program, a Pan-African Pre-Seed Accelerator is taking applications into its program which is tailored to support Africa’s early-stage founders and entrepreneurial talents in moving from idea to market.
